Activity of the Month

Celebrate Black History Month…Teach Tolerance!

“Bursting” Stereotypes:

Materials:
2-dozen multicolored balloons, inflated
One black permanent marker

Introduce the word stereotype to the class and discuss its meaning.  Share a few examples with the class to ensure they fully understand.

Examples:
All old people are forgetful.
Men are better at math than women are.
All tall people are good basketball players.

Have students work in groups to come up with other stereotype statements. Using a marker, write one statement on each inflated balloon.  Lead the class in a discussion of whether or not the statements are fair.  If the students decide that the stereotype should be “blasted”, pop the balloon.

the entire school can participate in.  Promote the activities in advance by giving informational flyers to staff, parents, and community members.
